Summer pictures, part 5: On the way to Yellowstone - Golden Spike National Historic Site

Finally catching up on the summer 2009 pictures! We took a family trip to Yellowstone. My parents went with us part way; we stopped at the Golden Spike National Historic Site (near Tremonten, UT). It's where the two railroads coming from the coasts met in the middle of the country.

Here are my folks:

One of the two engines that met was the Union Pacific 119:

The other was the Central Pacific Jupiter:
Pauline, Emily, and Grandpa:

The engines are functioning reproductions. They get both of them running, smoke and everything. The Jupiter was a wood-powered steam engine and the 119 a coal-powered steam engine.

Leslie, doing what she does best:

And here is the famous Golden Spike! Or at least a reproduction thereof.

This is a natural formation that got named "Chinaman's Arch", in honor of the Asian railroad workers:

Meanwhile, back at the car...
