Snow, snow, and more snow!
It snowed practically the entire weekend, about 2+ feet of snow total. That is apparently the most it has snowed in La Crosse in the past 10 years. We even had to cancel church on Sunday. The elementary schools were canceled today. UW-L still on, though, so I'm at work.

Riddle Games
Here's a fun series of clever riddles to work on, if you're looking for some time to kill:

I spent a few hours doing the riddles yesterday and today, and am now on riddle #32.
(If you need hints, feel free to email me.)

Math answers
Some former students of mine sent me these yesterday. No idea where they got them from. I think the first one is staged, but the rest were actual exam answers. My personal favorite is the elephant.
Acappella Math
As long as I'm posting acappella links, here's one my sister just sent me:

Trip to Utah
I visited Utah this week for a couple of days. Among other things, I gave a colloquium at BYU. I thought it went well!
In case anyone is interested, here's my talk in Powerpoint slideshow format:
John's BYU talk
Be warned, though--it's a large file, almost 12 MB, so don't download unless you have a fast connection. It's 53 slides long.

Bobby McFerin
OK, I'm having a little too much fun on the singers.com website now.
Here's another video, this one by Bobby McFerin--I had to to add this to my blog because of the line, "Anything you wanna be, you've got to know math."(*) :-)

(*) And as Pauline and I always tell Leslie and Emily, "Use math for good; never for evil!"

A New Love
I went to a vocal jazz concert last night at UW-L, and the group (VoicesIowa) sang a couple of numbers that I really liked, done originally by a Swedish group. So I looked up the Swedish group, and I'm impressed. They are "The Real Group".

...and it's cold!
It's been a warmer winter than our previous days here. But it has been a bit nippy the last couple of days. On the way to work today, I think the radio said it was -5 deg (Fahrenheit), -20 deg with windchill. And tomorrow is supposed to have a high of 5 deg.
